First projects are here!!

We have started our first projects of the new school year!  Students made their beginning of the year self portraits on their first art classes.  These are a favorite of mine, because I keep them until they leave our school.  On the final art class, as a 5th grader, students receive all of their portraits from the past years to see how they have grown and changed as young artists.  It is always a favorite day for me and my students.
On the second class meeting of the year, students started with introductions to the artist and concepts for our first lessons.  Kindergarten learns of the artist/ educator Alma Woodsey Thomas, and her beautiful expressionist color paintings.  First grade learns of the artist Joan Miro and reads the stories The Dot and ish by Peter Reynolds.  Second grade learns of various modern artists using robots as their theme in their work and begin painting and designing their own adaptive robots.  Third grade learns of the art of typography and design their own fonts. The fourth graders began their adventures in modern art with an introduction to OP Art with the work of Victor Vasarely and started working with color pencil to make a color wheel. The fifth graders began the year with a lesson on the Renaissance artist Leonardo Davinci, and his study of the human body.  We are off and running!  Please check back to see our young artist in action!
